Event Description: The 2017 Walk a Mile in My Shoes is an event like no other bringing awareness to mental health issues and Ozark Guidance! It's a SALE of new and nearly new shoes, handbags, accessories, and more, a RACE (5K/1M family fun walk), with a VIP Presale PARTY the night before. Why should I support Walk a Mile in My Shoes? • 1 in 5 adults, adolescents, and children can have mental health disorders that interfere with the way they think, feel, and act. o Northwest Arkansas now has a population of more than 500,000. Potentially 100,000 NWA residents could need mental health services at some point, but many will go untreated due to knowledge, stigma, or funding. • Untreated mental health disorders can be very costly to families, communities, and the health care system. • When untreated, mental health disorders can lead to school and work failure, family conflicts, drug abuse, violence, and even suicide. o Last year there were more than 500 reported suicides in Arkansas (16th in nation). • Ozark Guidance is the nonprofit community based mental health provider serving Washington, Benton, Madison, and Carroll Counties in Arkansas. o Annually, Ozark Guidance provides quality, compassionate mental health service to nearly 10,000 adults, children, and families. When we think about cancer or heart disease, we don’t wait years to treat them. We begin with awareness, education, and prevention. So why don’t we do the same for individuals dealing with mental health problems? Mental illnesses are real disorders with real treatments but too few people receive optimal care. It’s time to change the conversation. The SALE: we've been collecting new and nearly new shoes, handbags, and more from the best stores and closets across NWA. The public sale starts at 8 am Saturday, April 29, is open to the public, no entry fee. Brand new name brand running shoes donated by our presenting sponsor Rush Running Co. and high end designers will be sold for $40, other brand new shoes/handbags $20, and nearly new shoes/handbags $10 The RACE: lace up those running shoes and register for the new 5K and 1 Mile family fun walk benefiting Ozark Guidance Therapeutic Foster Care. The 8am race will start and finish at our main campus on 48th Street with walkers following. Early bird prices $25/5K and $10/Walk.
